Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to contest particular calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review other decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Practical Application

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
